If you are planning to go to the beach this upcoming summer, and your body is not quite ready for that cute bikini you purchased, you should start getting ready now in the winter.  Just because you are over 50 does not mean you cannot lose weight. Follow the tips below, and you can purchase any bathing suit you want.

Hormones

Your hormones are likely changing at this age, and they can play a part in your weight.  You are also headed to the road to menopause, which contributes to this problem. Once you reach age 30, your body fat can increase by 30%.

Estrogen is the hormone you have to keep an eye on, and when you start going through menopause your levels of estrogen lower. This can result in problems controlling your weight. Lower estrogen levels may cause you to eat more, and lower your metabolic rate.

See your doctor to check your hormone levels. If they are indeed low, they can help you get them back up again. They may prescribe medications, or there are estrogen creams you can use.

Strength Training

Your metabolism may not be as high as it once was, and strength training is a great way to increase it.  If you have never done strength training, you should visit a gym long enough to learn the different types of exercises you can do. They also have equipment that you can use.

One type of exercise you can do on your own at home is squatting overhead using weights. Purchase some hand weights, making sure the weights are a little hard for you to lift, but not so hard that you really have to strain. Three to five pounds should be fine for this purpose.

Hold a weight in each hand with your arms at your side, and strand up straight, go down into a squat. As you go down, lift your arms up. Hold this position for a few minutes and stand back up. Do this a few times per day to help strengthen your arms and legs. There are many other exercises you can do on your own at home. The gym can also give you some great tips to help you.

Fat Extraction

If you continue to have problems, you can get a little help with fat extraction, also called liposuction. With this procedure, a plastic surgeon will make a small incision into the fatty area, insert a suction cup into the incision to remove the fat. How long this takes depends on how much fat is being removed.  This procedure can remove fat from different areas of your body, such as from your thighs, neck, arms, buttocks, hips, and abdomen. Before you start trying to lose weight, see your doctor to ensure you are healthy. They may also suggest seeing a nutritionist to help you come up with a good eating plan to further help you. This, along with the two tips above, is a great way to get started on getting ready for your new bathing suit.
